UN:Me: A Cerebral Horror Merging Silent Hill and Among Us Mechanics

The recent Day of the Devs online presentation unveiled several intriguing future games, but one especially has seized the imagination: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player experience seems to fuse together the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill title with the paranoid deduction core of Among Us.

"This is a unique experience where a young woman harboring multiple human souls within her must escape from a labyrinth of the mind," explains producer Yasukazu Kawai.

Entering a Fractured Mind

In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed heroine seeming to be of high school age. Within her reside four distinct personas, each with unique anxieties and motivations. These entities can take over at will, unleashing their deep-seated phobias upon her without warning.

Based on showcased gameplay, much of the narrative unfolds within a eerie medical facility, though additional clips depict the protagonist navigating a abandoned chapel.

A World of Personal Dread

"What are you afraid of? What makes you uncomfortable?" asks creative lead Shun Sasaki. "High places. Small rooms. Authority figures. Things that appear minor to others can activate a deep instinct inside us. This game explores that concept — fears that are specific to every individual."

The central gameplay loop involves managing whichever soul emerges at any given moment. However, these souls will change against your will as you play. While exploring, every persona's anxieties become amplified and assault the protagonist one after another. When the soul shifts, so does the particular terror the player encounters.

Unsettling Visuals and a Deadly Decision

Initially, UN:Me displays noticeable visual similarities with the Silent Hill series. The hospital is populated by nurses who all share the identical visage, with disturbingly broad grins. Patients in the waiting room have large blooms where their heads should be. Flowers are a recurring element, juxtaposing organic elegance with unnatural horror.

Yet, UN:Me introduces a unique twist. Players must determine which of the four souls inhabiting the protagonist is the "true" one. "All four souls asserts that the body belongs to them," notes a developer. "During the game, you need to figure out who is authentic."

Once players believes a soul is fake, they must eliminate it. However, since each soul can lie or obfuscate the truth, it is incredibly simple to choose incorrectly.

"Perhaps you've already destroyed the true [soul] with your own hands," the narration states. "The final entity standing might be a fake. Either way, your decisions are irreversible."

UN:Me does not yet have a confirmed release date, but it is available to follow on platforms.
