Three-time National Basketball Association MVP Nikola Jokic endured a "devastating" injury to his knee when the Nuggets were defeated 147-123 to the Heat.
The Serbian center injured himself in the latter stages of the opening half in an inadvertent coming together with teammate Spencer Jones.
His teammate landed on the foot of the MVP, who immediately fell to the ground holding his knee.
The 30-year-old, that tops the league season in boards and assists, had a score of 21 points and eight assists in the game prior to suffering the setback.
Jokic will undergo an scan on Tuesday to determine the severity of the injury.
"Immediately, he realized something was wrong," said Nuggets coach Adelman.
"Injuries are part of the game. Anyone who suffers an injury, that's tough to see, particularly a player as special as he is. We'll find out more on Tuesday."
"We'll move on as a team. Of course, currently, I am more worried about Jokic as a person and the letdown of experiencing a situation like that."
