The network's Top Fresh Series of This Year Earns a Major Extension for an Additional Two Seasons.

During the fall season, Adult Swim welcomed back its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. However, not long after, the network launched a completely new animated series with a strikingly different vibe. Haha, You Clowns proved to be gentle and comforting, in the spirit of a animated take of a laid-back talk show. During a period often defined by bleakness, this show's wholesomeness struck a chord and helped it become a surprise hit.

A Two-Season Greenlight

In mid-December, Adult Swim made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for a further two seasons. This offers showrunner Joe Cappa a massive runway to develop the story of the Campbell family. The show follows three well-mannered teenage brothers whose central trait is their deep love for their single father, with Cappa voicing for all four central characters.

"I am incredibly thankful to the viewers of the show who took a chance on the show and spread the word," stated Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for a little longer."

A President's Endorsement

The official statement also included praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and uniquely eerie." He specifically highlighted the fans who found the show and advocated for its uniquely offbeat style.

"All of you showed up for this new show, praised it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Wholesome Alternative

Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a wholesome alternative" to more cynical adult animated fare. There’s something deeply soothing about watching this charming family go about their everyday routines.

At the time, creator Joe Cappa expressed his goal to evolve comedy past its long-running sarcastic tone. He attributed this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.

ā€œWe're stuck in a cycle of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,ā€ noted Cappa. ā€œIt's like we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we just have to laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.ā€

The Path Forward

Now, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa could potentially be part of that change he described. If nothing else, the renewal promises audiences additional episodes to enjoy the warm glow of the beloved Campbell clan.

The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The complete first season is available for streaming on HBO Max.
