The Compassion of Unknown Individuals: How a Man I Only Just Encountered Assisted Me Secure the Position That Changed My Life

In the final years of the 1980s, I set out on a low-cost journey to Europe with a travel partner. Because my companion was exploring enrolling in graduate studies in the Big Apple, we had booked a fortnight visit there en route to London.

We got to the postgrad residence, a big 10-storey building on the Upper West Side known as International House. Once we unpacked, we headed straight to the dining hall, where we grabbed food, found a table, and started talking to fellow residents.

Adjacent to my seat was an Iraqi man studying engineering at an Ivy League institution. He asked me what I did, and I explained that I had newly finished with a degree in science and had been conducting research with electron microscopy.

He mentioned that there was an electron microscope unit at the university – adjacent to the engineering faculty, which was the reason he was familiar with it. He suggested that I should apply for a role with them. I dismissed the idea, telling him that I was soon departing to Europe and, even more importantly, I did not possess a US visa.

A day later I toured the city, returning to the canteen that after dark. The engineering student came up to me and informed me that he had arranged an interview for me with the head of the electron microscope unit at Columbia. Because he had gone to the trouble, I showed up for the discussion – but straight off informed my prospective employer that I was without a work permit, so I was unable to accept the role.

In typical New York fashion – a city where anything feels possible – she said: “We can make that happen. How soon can you begin?” I missed my plane to London.

I worked there for 36 months. An advantage of the role was that I got free tuition at Columbia, and I seized the chance to complete a postgrad program in international relations.

I never saw that student again and I am unaware of his full name, but his selfless gesture changed my life in so many ways. I lacked the confidence or self-belief to contact anyone at an elite institution and request employment. And, I had always wanted to study abroad, but could never have afforded it without that educational benefit.

Critically, that role at the university paved the way for a position in Switzerland where I got to know my beautiful French husband, with whom I am raising four amazing children. It was a total sliding doors moment. That benevolent individual changed my trajectory in life, and I’m eternally thankful.
