There are "no preparations" for American leader Donald Trump to confer with Russian President Vladimir Putin "in the immediate future", a White House official has stated.
This past week the US president stated he and the Kremlin leader would meet in Hungary's capital in the coming fortnight to examine the Ukraine conflict.
A preparatory meeting between US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and his Russian counterpart Foreign Minister Lavrov was scheduled to occur recently - but the White House stated the two had had a "positive" discussion and that a face-to-face session was no longer "necessary".
The White House withheld additional specifics on why the talks had been put on hold.
Trump had raised the possibility of a Hungarian meeting via telephone with the Russian leader, a day before hosting Ukrainian President President Zelensky in the Oval Office.
Various sources suggested his meeting with Zelensky had been a "contentious discussion", with those familiar claiming Trump had urged him to relinquish large areas of eastern Ukraine as part of a settlement with Russia.
Nevertheless, on Monday Trump embraced a ceasefire proposal supported by Kyiv and EU officials to freeze the conflict on the existing battle lines.
"Let it be cut the way it is," he stated.
Russia has repeatedly pushed back against pausing the present battle positions.
The Russian government was solely focused on "long-term, sustainable peace", Lavrov commented on this week, indicating that halting hostilities would simply constitute a short-term truce.
The "root causes" of the war demanded attention, the Russian diplomat said, using Kremlin shorthand for a range of maximalist demands that include the acknowledgment of complete Moscow control over the eastern region as well as the disarmament of Ukraine – a impossible condition for Kyiv and its EU supporters.
The Ukrainian president stated conversations concerning the front line were the "beginning of diplomacy" but that Russia was "taking all measures" to prevent dialogue.
He additionally stated the only topic that could cause Russia to "take notice" was that of the provision of extended-range arms to the Ukrainian military.
Putin's unscheduled call with the US leader last Thursday came ahead of rumors that the US was planning to provide distance-capable weapons to Ukrainian forces that could theoretically target inside Russia.
The Ukrainian leader stated it was the missile discussion that had compelled Moscow to enter into dialogue. The discussion regarding the weapons systems had proven to be a "strong investment" in diplomacy", he added.
