A recent study suggests that people who discontinue popular weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional diet and exercise regimens.
Research printed in a prominent health publication points out that while obese individuals can lose about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Users buying these medications should be informed of the danger of fast weight regain when the medication ends," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain means a return to pre-treatment weight in about a year and a half.
Comparing Treatments
The analysis, which examined 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with conventional dieting.
The team emphasize that people who shed pounds through dieting generally have a less rapid creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
The Reason for the Fast Regain
Nutrition scientists believe the way of the drugs explains the heightened rebound.
These medications mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels far above than normal might result in the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is uncontrolled, making overeating far more likely."
An Ongoing Disease?
Medical guidelines advise the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts say that, given the high risk of relapse, the treatment might need to be life-long.
This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "highlight the long-term nature of obesity," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
Patient Accounts
Users who have discontinued the medication describe a powerful return of cravings.
"I experienced a trigger activating and you're instantly extremely hungry," described a patient.
The struggle is compounded if individuals have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Growing Adoption
Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.
- Use is higher among females than males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Ultimately, clinicians emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and long-term success hinges on integrated behavioural support.
