Individuals from both sides of the political divide and the entertainment industry are coming together to denounce Donald Trump for his remarks in the wake of the shocking passing of esteemed director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.
Following the discovery of the couple deceased at their Los Angeles residence, Trump posted on his platform to label the late director as "tortured and struggling". The post, he asserted Reiner's demise was "due to the hostility he caused others through his enormous, unyielding, and untreatable affliction with a debilitating disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".
The post quickly shifted to praising his own achievements, juxtaposing Reiner's alleged "raging obsession" and "obvious paranoia" with what Trump called the "unprecedented era of America".
Authorities have since announced the detention of the couple's 32-year-old son, Nick, on suspicion of homicide in connection with the incident. It is reported his bond was established at a substantial sum.
The response to Trump's words was swift and harsh.
âWhat a disgusting and vile statement,â said public figure Patrick Schwarzenegger.
Media personality Whoopi Goldberg, who called Reiner a friend, also criticized the remarks. Goldberg referenced prior rhetoric from Trump regarding the killing of an activist, demanding, "Have you no decency? Can you get any lower?"
California's Governor, Gavin Newsom, succinctly wrote, "This is a disturbed man."
Mirroring this sentiment, Congressman Maxwell Alejandro Frost said, "He is a despicable piece of garbage."
Senator Chris Murphy commented, "Trump has just lost it. Now implying Rob and Michele Reiner caused their own murder because they didnât support him. So sick."
A number of Republican lawmakers also expressed dismay.
Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene stated that the event was "a family tragedy, not about politics or political enemies". She also mentioned challenges with substance abuse and psychological well-being within families.
Another GOP congressman, Thomas Massie, labeled Trump's discourse "unacceptable and disgraceful" given the nature of the deaths. He openly dared members in his party to justify the comments.
Rob Reiner was consistently a vocal critic of Donald Trump. During a past interview, he stated Trump was "mentally unfit" for the office. He had also warned about the dangers of autocracy if Trump return to power.
"We see autocracy making its move around the world," Reiner said. "If we fall, thereâs a danger that democratic systems crumble around the world."
Regardless of his strong opposition, Reiner had in the past shown "absolute horror" and condemned political violence unequivocally after the killing of another individual.
Adding a layer of historical irony, Michele Reiner, previously Michele Singer, was the photographer who shot the photograph for Donald Trump's iconic book, The Art of the Deal.
Rob Reiner had previously shared the anecdote of the photo shoot, noting Trump's request for "special hairspray" as being photographed on a high-rise with a view of Central Park.
