A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the speed and execution of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.
The crash happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a line constructed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate the cause of this incident,” stated the head of state.
The leader announced that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The leader added plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those involved.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the previous administration, whose term finished the previous year. This project was closely associated with his administration's developmental agenda for the southeastern region.
Another massive train initiative from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to stimulate the economic fortunes of a relatively less developed part of the country.
Building Management and Safety Concerns
The building of both railway systems was overseen by the armed forces, marking a notable growth of its responsibilities in public projects. They were completed at an accelerated pace, surpassing forecasts to be at least partly launched before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had also sparked significant questions over operational security.
- Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This encompasses an prior crash this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen several non-deadly derailments.
Calls for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a primary political opposition demanded an prompt halt in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This stoppage was suggested while awaiting a comprehensive safety audit. The party stated that the situation "calls for prompt explanations."
In reaction, the president asserted that the train had been running in full compliance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the development and operation of these vital initiatives.
