Liverpool's Captain Concedes Team is in a Mess, Challenges Teammates on Accountability

Virgil van Dijk has issued a blunt evaluation of the club's woeful title defence, admitting the title holders are in a mess and failing head coach Slot while questioning whether every player is owning up for the current downturn.

“We had a productive build-up to the match but in a fixture you are facing facts and the facts are we gave away a free-kick in the opening period and a poor concession at the beginning after the break,” said Van Dijk. “As a team, we're definitely letting him down, but we’ve let ourselves down as well. Start with self-reflection and then you help each other, you help each other get out of this crisis because at the present time it is a difficult situation – that’s just a fact.

Van Dijk’s Demands: Take Responsibility

The skipper typically addresses the media after a game as part of his duties as team leader. Saturday was different, however. His voice was more forceful – audible enough that any teammate in the Anfield tunnel could listen in – and he expressed visible fury while challenging the dressing room to react. “Anger is justified,” he insisted. “The main thing for me is that everyone has to be accountable.” When questioned whether that is happening, Van Dijk replied: “I don’t know. But it's essential. That's crucial I expect the players to do. It's challenging during difficult times but we have to do it if we want to get out of this.”

Summer Signings and Team Problems

The Merseyside club spent almost £450m to strengthen a title-winning squad in the off-season but have regressed, with new arrivals struggling to contribute so far. Van Dijk maintained that Liverpool’s issues go beyond the new recruits. “It’s tough for all involved,” he said. “My expectation is for everyone to be answerable on the pitch. This is necessary in order to push each other, to improve collectively. If a teammate presses, you must join the effort. These are fundamentals but they're lacking enough.”

Appeal to Stick Together

The Dutchman continued: “This season we don’t have any steady form, we concede far too many goals, we are losing battles and all share the blame for it and I hope this is recognized. It's vital to accept duty to reverse the situation and it is easy to point fingers but unity is essential. We have been through it together and claimed the title and all contributed, and during a challenging phase you must remain united and not point fingers.

“You have to be a man and confront the hardship and persist, again and again because if you want to give up then you are at the wrong place in my view, because Liverpool has been enduring many adversity over those years and we’ve always come out of it. But it doesn’t mean it is straightforward, it’s exhausting but there is only one path forward.”

Looking Ahead

Next up in the domestic league is a trip to West Ham next weekend, after the Champions League fixture of the Dutch side in the European competition. Van Dijk said: “The next game is another opportunity so how should I respond, go home and cry? Certainly not, I'll go home and try to think how we can turn this around and I trust that is what everyone is doing as well.”
