Harsh Winter Storms Claim 5 Lives in Gaza Amidst Desperate Living Situations in Temporary Camps.

Powerful cold-season gusts brought walls down onto fragile shelters sheltering people uprooted by conflict in Gaza, claiming the lives of no fewer than 4 individuals. This tragedy highlights the perilous situation that continue after more than 24 months of devastating airstrikes and critical lack of aid.

Truce Provides No Respite from Severe Weather

Although a ceasefire has been in effect from October, aid groups state that residents do not have the adequate housing required to survive frequent winter storms.

Officials at Shifa hospital, which received the victims, reported on Tuesday that the dead include a pair of adult females, a young female, and a man.

In a separate incident, the Gaza health ministry announced on Tuesday that a one-year-old boy died of extreme cold during the night.

"The world has allowed us to witness loss of life in every possible way," said Bassel Hamouda after the burial. "While it is correct the bombing may have paused for now, but we have seen every conceivable cause of fatality in the world in the Gaza Strip."

Family Crushed in Tent Collapse

As per the medical center, three members of a one family — 72-year-old a man, his teenage relative, and his son's wife — were fatally injured when an 26-foot tall wall fell onto their dwelling in a coastal area of Gaza City. At least five others were injured in the incident.

Family members on that day started removing the debris that had buried their loved ones and rebuilding the tent shelters for those who remained.

Humanitarian Distribution and Ongoing Crisis

United Nations agencies and its aid organization allies were distributing tents, tarps, warm covers and clothes as well as nutrition and sanitation items throughout Gaza, said the UN office for the coordination of humanitarian affairs.

The majority of the population reside in improvised shelters since their houses were turned into rubble during the war. Humanitarian organizations say not enough building supplies are reaching Gaza under the ceasefire.

Casualty Numbers Since the Truce

Local health authorities, which is part of the administration, reports more than 440 individuals have been fatally shot by Israeli fire and their bodies taken to hospitals after the truce began. The ministry maintains detailed casualty records that are considered largely accurate by international bodies and outside analysts.

A spokesperson for UNICEF, spokesperson for the UN children’s agency Unicef, stated on Tuesday that at least 100 children below eighteen years old – sixty males and forty females – had been lost their lives since the truce started because of military operations, such as unmanned aerial vehicle attacks, airstrikes, tank shelling and use of bullets. These numbers, he said, represented cases where sufficient information had been gathered to warrant documentation, but the total toll is believed to be higher. He added that many hundreds of minors had been injured.

"Although 'bombings and gunfire have slowed' during the truce, they have not ceased," Elder told journalists at a press conference in the Swiss city by video link from Gaza City. "Therefore what the world now terms quiet would be viewed as a catastrophe in any other place," he said.

Third Cold Season of Hardship

Gaza’s population of more than 2 million people has been fighting to fend off the freezing temperatures and bad weather at bay while facing lack of assistance and a lack of sturdier transitional shelter, which is urgently needed during the winter months. It’s the 3rd cold season since the conflict between the state and Hamas started on a date in late 2023, when fighters attacked Israeli territory and murdered approximately 1,200 individuals and took hostage two hundred and fifty-one more into Gaza.

Gaza’s health ministry says over seventy-one thousand four hundred people have been fatally injured in Israel’s military campaign.
