2K Recruits Apex Legends Developer to Revitalize Troubled Hero Shooter Project Ethos

2K Games has welcomed Ben Brinkman from Respawn Entertainment to direct the development team at 31st Union, which is currently crafting the upcoming over-the-shoulder action-packed title known as this innovative game.

Leadership Transition Comes After Poor Reception

Brinkman assumes the leadership position at 31st Union following the dismissal of previous head Michael Condrey, who was removed from his post due to Project Ethos' underwhelming unveiling last fall.

Recently, 2K president David Ismailer notified employees about this decision through an internal memo, which highlighted that playtesting had indicated the need for a distinct game identity.

The president expressed that the team is now overhauling Project Ethos with a revised focus, aiming to address community desires.

Trend of Key Recruitment

The news follows a similar move taken by the publisher in the summer, when they recruited an industry veteran from Blizzard to work on the BioShock studio Cloud Chamber.

Here is the full content from the president's announcement:

Team—

I understand you all just finished your town hall - I hope you’re as excited as I am with the recent updates. Last time I sent you all a update, I mentioned the following: “I am confident in this team. You all are some of the most dedicated and innovative developers we have had the opportunity to collaborate with - and we’re eager for that collaboration to continue.”

Through your commitment and adaptability, especially over the last year, you repeatedly show that.

The player input from last fall’s Project ETHOS playtest was enlightening. It confirmed the appeal of a roguelike shooter but indicated we still had work to do. It revealed the necessity for a more distinct brand.

It’s been inspiring to see how far you’ve progressed. You accepted the input to consideration and revamped the title with a revitalized vision - one that’s positioned to deliver on its potential to our audience.

Our confidence in this project grows every day. To advance the remarkable development you’ve made, It is a pleasure to introduce Ben Brinkman as the incoming Lead of the team. After several months of conversations, Ben officially joins us on the specified date.

Ben’s guidance and background in the competitive gaming field is vast, having dedicated the past decade and a half producing and managing some of the most recognizable series in the industry, including Call of Duty: Black Ops, and lately, Apex Legends.

I invite you all in greeting him soon. We are all looking forward to keep seeing the development of Project ETHOS in the months to come.

The President

Experience of the New Head

The appointee currently serves in the position of executive producer and head of production at Respawn Entertainment for Apex Legends. Brinkman earlier worked at major gaming companies in diverse development positions on the Call of Duty games, and, before that, had stints at other industry leaders.

Title Information and Vision

The upcoming game was revealed in last year in conjunction with a public demo. At the time, 31st Union portrayed the title as a "no-cost, third-person perspective roguelike hero shooter and an innovative advancement on the genre."

"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Build your hero in real-time to match your preferred approach," the game's pitch explains. "Take on the opponents with new abilities, challenges, and tests that change every round. Will you safely extract with your collected items? Alternatively aim high, gamble everything, and hope your group can achieve the highest spot? The decision is up to you."

Project Ethos does not have an confirmed debut schedule or platforms, but players can anticipate further news as production continues.
